In the second painting of the Bright Darkness series, the ancient serpent symbolizes dread, and the blockage of achievement of full potential, while the man below represents inordinate perseverance. The impossibility of overcoming the serpent with an axe alone is clear, and yet, through unyielding dedication, one could not only reach the light at the end of the tunnel, but witness the beauty of the horizon ahead.
